Being a responsible Chevy owner is incredibly rewarding. Things happen though, and knowing what to look for to see if you need a battery replacement can save you money and a headache. We have you covered! Read on to learn more, including when to contact your local Chevy dealer.

Corrosion

If you lift the hood of your Chevy and locate the battery, it should be clean with no buildup or residue. However, if you see a white/blue flakey substance covering the places where the battery connects, that’s called corrosion. If corrosion isn’t the main reason your battery is performing below your expectations, it could be affecting it. Be sure to schedule an inspection appointment at your local service center to find out for sure.

Physical Damage

Perhaps the easiest battery issue to spot is physical damage to the battery. If your Chevy has been in an accident involving the front of the car or suffered severe weather damage, it is more likely that you can see the damage inflicted on the battery. But some physical damage isn’t so easy to see. Heat damage, for example, occurs within the battery itself, and rarely shows any external indicators.

Clicking Sounds

A clicking or ticking sound should be odd to hear coming from your Chevy. Especially if it happens while trying to start your car. This means your ignition isn’t getting the power it needs from your battery to function. If your battery light has been glaring at you from the recesses of your driving dashboard for a while before this happened, that would be confirmation that the battery needs service.

Electric Issues

Dim headlights, the dashboard flickering, no charge to your phone when you connect it: these are all common indicators that something is wrong with the electricity in your car.

When to Contact Your Chevy Dealer About a Battery Replacement

Depending on usage and environmental conditions, a car battery should last somewhere between 3–5 years. All car batteries have a tag that states the manufacture date, and you can use that to estimate the age of the battery. You can also always schedule an appointment and the service technician can tell you as well.

Preventative maintenance, like regular battery checks, can save you money, reduce or prevent downtime, and keep you safe. So be sure to schedule routine maintenance checks. If you’re already experiencing any of the issues we have listed here, call us at Hank Graff Chevrolet in Davison, MI today to schedule an appointment and get your battery performing as it should.
