Parker amusement rides, the beautifully hand-painted 1912 Carousel and the carved wooden and hand-painted 1910 Superior Wheel, the only one left in the world. 3. Seven Lakes State Park

The beautiful 230-acre park has more than seven miles of clearly marked multi-purpose trails and plenty of animals and birds along the way. The swamps and lakes attract an array of bird species, and hikers often catch glimpses of deer, beavers, muskrats, turtles, and squirrels.

The 170-acre Big Seven Lake and the  44-acre Dickinson Lake are ideal for paddling and fishing for bass, pike, bluegill, tiger muskie, and catfish. The park also has a concession offering a variety of snacks.

4. Curwood Castle

Take a 39-mile drive to Owosso to explore the magical medieval Curwood Castle at 224 Curwood Castle Drive. The pretty yellow fairytale castle was built in 1923 for author James Oliver. It was here, surrounded by scenic woodlands, where he penned his novels from the highest turret overlooking the Shiawassee River.

Oliver, who lived in the castle for five years before his death in 1927, was not only a writer but also an avid environmentalist and conservationist. Today Curwood Castle is open to the public as a park and museum.
