There are things that can go wrong in your vehicle even if you get preventative maintenance right on schedule at your local Chevy dealer. That’s why it’s really important to know the signs that something is wrong with one of your car’s components. Let’s take a look at some of the common signs that show up when you need to head to the dealer for a transmission repair.

How to Tell When You Should Visit your local Chevy Dealer For a Transmission Repair

Slipping Gears

Slipping out of gear is one of the most common signs that your transmission is starting to fail. Lots of different problems can cause your vehicle to slip out of gear while driving, including damage to the gears or low levels of transmission fluid.

If your Chevy starts slipping out of gear, then get out of heavy traffic as soon as possible and head to the dealer. It can be really dangerous to drive when your vehicle starts slipping out of gear, especially on the highway.

Delayed Gear Changes

If it takes a few extra seconds for your vehicle to shift into gear after you use the gear selector lever, then there’s a problem with the transmission. The gears could be worn out, you may not have enough transmission fluid, or there may be issues with the solenoid. No matter what’s causing the problem, you need to get it fixed as soon as you can, as this delayed engagement when you shift gears can be inconvenient at worst and dangerous at best.

Unusual Noises

If your vehicle whines or hums, then you might be having a problem with your automatic transmission. If you hear a clunking sound, then it may indicate a problem with your manual transmission. You should always listen out for new noises each time you take your Chevy out for a spin, as you never know when one of these sounds can crop up and tell you that something’s wrong.

Burning Odor

If you smell something burning, then you should pull over. Your transmission might be overheating, and you’ll need to wait for it to cool down before you start driving again and head straight to the dealer. If the transmission itself isn’t overheating, then the fluid may be the issue. Old and ineffective fluid can burn up and cause problems.

Fluid Leaks

Look out for pools of red liquid under the vehicle, as that’s a sign you have a leak somewhere in the transmission system. Rapidly falling transmission fluid levels also let you know that there might be a leak.
